Sean E. Smith, MD, MPHS is a board-certified physiatrist with specialty training in neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Smith was the inaugural ALS Clinical Trials Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis. An early career physician-researcher, Dr. Smith joined the ALS Center and Miller Lab under the mentorship of Dr. Timothy Miller and Dr. Robert Bucelli. He has extensive training in clinical outcomes and currently serves as a principal investigator and sub-investigator on several ALS clinical trials.

Dr. Smith completed his bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Delaware, master’s degree in Exercise Nutrition at SUNY Buffalo, and medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. In 2019, he completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital followed by a master’s degree in Population Health Sciences (MPHS) in 2020 at Washington University. He completed a clinical fellowship in Neuromuscle Medicine at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2021.

Dr. Smith brings his expertise in rehabilitation medicine to our multidisciplinary ALS care continuum focusing on care coordination, symptom management, and optimizing functional independence and mobility. His current research projects include the development of a shared decision-making tool for patients with ALS considering genetic testing and a mindfulness self-compassion-based intervention to enhance quality of life in patients with ALS.
